Length about 7 mm. This is a black bodied species, the scutellum is pale yellow.

It occurs in association with old and recently fallen trees and also log piles. It clearly favours willows and poplars at many sites and can occur in association with scattered riverside trees as well as woodland and thickets, especially those associated with wetlands.

Flight period May to August.

Larva may be found under the bark of Poplars and Willows.

Solva marginata is widespread but local in southern and central England with records extending north to Yorkshire.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
