Wingspan 45-50 mm. A highly distinctive and unusual moth, which rests with the wings folded longitudinally, looking very much like a withered autumn leaf.

May be found almost anywhere.

May to October.

Usually at least two generations in Britain. The species is also a common migrant and can occur in large numbers at coastal locations.

This species is common both as a resident and a migrant in England, Wales and Ireland. In Scotland, the Inner Hebrides and Orkney the species is much more localised. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = A (common and resident)
