Length 4 to 6.5 mm with a metallic bronze appearance.

Associated with oak but it is a polyphagous species and will, less frequently, feed on various other tree species.

May and June are probably the peak period for adults.

The larvae feed under the bark of younger stems and branches, their presence indicated by unevenly raised marks on the surface of branches caused by the underlying larval tunnels.

Occasional in the southern half of Britain becoming scarcer further north.

Infrequently recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were approximately 11 VC55 records for this species up to the end of 2017.
