In the first year the leaves form a rosette. In the second year the stem extends from the rosette and leaves are alternate along it. The inflorescence is a raceme which may be branched. The flowers are usually yellow. There are 5 stamens, some or all of the filaments are hairy.

In flower during June, July and August.

Biennial.

Occasional with most records from the west and the north of Britain.

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in 3 of the 617 tetrads.
