Description
A fairly small (5.5 to 7 mm) member of the Staphylinidae family. There are two forms, one with red elytra and the other a more uniformly dark form.
Identification difficulty
Habitat
Possibly associated with sandy soils.
When to see it
All year round but best time seems to be late spring and summer.
UK Status
Widespread but rather infrequent in Britain.
VC55 Status
Rare or rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were only 2 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
