Wingspan about 42 mm. Another of the difficult to separate Epirrita species, the poorly-marked specimens of which are best identified by reference to the genitalia.

It inhabits heaths and woods. 

Flying from September to October.

The larvae feed on Birch and Alder.

It is widely distributed over most of the British Isles, but its exact distribution details are clouded by confusion with the other Epirrita species. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = C (very scarce resident or rare migrant). Identification by reference to the genitalia is usually needed if records of this species are to be accepted for VC55.
