Wingspan 24-28 mm. Mostly greyish-brown on the upperwing with a distinctively-shaped central white spot and one or two other whitish markings - this is a fairly easily recognised species.

Woodland, gardens and waste ground.

Adult flies in June and July.

The caterpillars feed on a variety of herbaceous plants.

It is fairly common over most of Britain. In the Butterfly Conservation’s Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as common.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = A (common and resident)
