This all black beetle is 9-12mm and has dark brown legs and antennae, though the femora and antennal bases are black. It has a sinuate pronotum with sharp and raised hind angles.

Various habitats in search of prey, but tends to favour damper locations and is often found in woods.

Widespread and abundant in Britain.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 142 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
