Wingspan 15-26 mm. The general appearance is fairly constant but the species does show a large size variation.

A common inhabitant inside houses and is often found on indoor walls as it begins to go dark.

It can be found on the wing at any time of the year but is more common in the summer.

The larvae feed on detritus and other material that accumulates indoors behind skirting boards and other similar places.

This species is common throughout the British Isles. In the Butterfly Conservation’s Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as common.

Very common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = A (common and resident)
